Surface evolution of rutile TiO2 (100) in an oxidizing environment

چکیده
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used to study the rutile TiO2 (100) surface in an oxidizing environment. By changing annealing conditions, TiO2 surfaces with different morphologies are obtained. We report a new centered (2 · 2) surface reconstruction on this surface. Our experimental data indicates that this is a meta-stable, oxygen deficient structure formed as the disordered surface regains its stoichiometry in an oxidizing annealing environment. 2006 Elsevier B.V. Structure and local-equilibrium thermodynamics of the c(2x2) reconstruction of rutile TiO2 (100).
We resolve the structure of a c(2x2) reconstruction of the rutile TiO2 (100) surface using a combination of transmission electron diffraction, direct methods analysis, and density functional theory. The surface structure contains an ordered array of subsurface oxygen vacancies and is in local thermodynamic equilibrium with bulk TiO2, but not the with oxygen gas-phase environment. The transition...
متن کاملRoom Temperature Synthesis of N-doped Urchin-like Rutile TiO2 Nanostructure With Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity Under Sunlight
We report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped urchin-like rutile TiO2 nanostructure at room temperature without further heat treatment. The process was operated through hydrolysis of Ti(OC4H9)4 employing the direct amination of the product. The samples characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and Brunaue...
متن کاملImmobilization of cobalt doped rutile TiO2 on carbon nanotubes walls for efficient photodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol under visible light
In this work, we focused on improvement of rutile-type TiO2 degradation efficiency by cobalt doping and decorating on carbon nanotubes walls (CNTs) (Co-TiO2/CNTs). We also synthesized pure TiO2, Co-TiO2 and TiO2/CNTs samples for control experiments. The textural and morphology features of the samples were characterized by a range of analyses including: XRD, FESEM/EDX. FTIR, TEM, UV-Vis DRS and ...
متن کاملOrientation Dependence of Photochemical Reactions on TiO2 Surfaces
The photochemistry of oriented rutile surfaces has been examined using the photoreduction of Ag+ to Ag metal from an aqueous solution onto the TiO2 surfaces. The photochemical reaction rates and quantum yields of rutile films were found to be a function of the orientation of the rutile surface. The (100) and (110) rutile orientations have lower photoreduction rates than the (101), (111), and (0...
متن کاملAssessing the effects of surface-bound humic acid on the phototoxicity of anatase and rutile TiO₂ nanoparticles in vitro.
In this study, the cytotoxicity of two different crystal phases of TiO2 nanoparticles, with surface modification by humic acid (HA), to Escherichia coli, was assessed. The physicochemical properties of TiO2 nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized. Three different initial concentrations, namely 50, 100, and 200 ppm, of HA were used for synthesis of HA coated TiO2 nanoparticles (denoted as A/...
